Scar Treatment with Dermal Filler

June 24, 2010

I had a really interesting patient recently, Mrs OM is an older lady ~ 70 yrs old who was having significant issues adapting to a scar on the end of her nose.  This scar was there because a nasty skin cancer had been removed and the doctor had used a simple ellipse excision even though there wasn’t a lot of spare skin there – frequently the case, we are talking about the tip of her nose here!  Anyway, the cancer was gone but a flat circular scar remained.  The skin was so tight in this scar that the tip of her nose had a flat section.  Imagine a normal nose – straight bridge of nose leading down to a nice rounded tip.  Now imagine what Mrs OM was dealing with – a straight bridge of nose leading to start of rounded tip, then angular flat section, then rounded again. It was pretty obvious to the casual on looker.  No wonder it was making it difficult for her to sleep at night – she woke up frequently with obsessive thoughts about her nose!  It even caused depression requiring medication!  The good news is that her GP thought that maybe I would be able to help.  I saw her originally a few weeks ago and put some dermal filler- J Plus into the scar which helped to lift it a bit.  At the time she wasn’t all that impressed “it looks just the same!”  When the swelling from the filler being inserted decreased; she started to notice that her nose looked different.  Today was our review appointment and she was ecstatic with her new nose. Mrs OM became very excited about the prospect of returning in a few months to have permanent filler in to replace the J Plus.
