Numbing cream is applied approximately half an hour prior to the procedure. The small injections are quite comfortable. The needle is smaller than that commonly used by diabetics to inject their insulin.
To further minimise discomfort, a vibrating instrument may be applied to the area being treated which limits the transmission of pain impulses to the pain fibres. We often use ice as well to minimise discomfort. Taking two paracetamol tablets one hour prior to the procedure can also help. Avoid ibuprofen (Advil or Nurofen) as this can increase bruising.
