Piercing Repair Options at Cosmetic Image Clinics

At Cosmetic Image Clinics, we offer both at-home and in-clinic piercing repair options depending on the severity and type of piercing damage.

Not all piercing repairs require a surgical procedure. Smaller or mildly stretched piercings may respond well to conservative topical treatment, while larger tears or significantly stretched piercings may require an in-clinic medical assessment and repair procedure.

  • Our At Home Piercing Repair Treatment is generally recommended for smaller or minor piercing concerns, including:

    • Nose piercings

    • Lip piercings

    • Eyebrow piercings

    • Belly button piercings

    • Small earring hole enlargement

The treatment contains a professionally formulated trichloroacetic acid (TCA) solution designed to support controlled skin resurfacing and contraction around the piercing tract over time.

Results vary between individuals and multiple treatment sessions may be required.

This treatment is not intended for complete tears, severe stretching, or significantly split tissue.

  • For larger or more advanced piercing damage, we offer in-clinic repair procedures performed by experienced medical practitioners.

These procedures are typically recommended for:

    • Completely torn earlobes

    • Large gauge ear stretching

    • Significant splitting or tissue distortion

    • Piercings unlikely to respond to conservative topical treatment

    • Cases where suturing may be required

Depending on the presentation, treatment may involve:

    • Surgical excision of damaged tissue

    • Layered closure techniques

    • Suturing

    • Scar minimisation approaches

A consultation is required to determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

  • If you are unsure whether your piercing concern is suitable for at-home treatment or requires an in-clinic procedure, our team can assist in guiding you toward the most appropriate option.

    In general:

    • Minor stretching or small enlarged piercings may be suitable for at-home treatment

    • Larger tears, gauge repairs, or fully split piercings are typically better managed in clinic

Frequently Asked Questions

  • If a surgical re-excision is required, then:

Local anaesthetic is injected with a very fine needle.

The damaged holes are surgically removed.

The resulting hole is repaired using fine suturing.

Sutures are removed after one week on average.

Please note: Stretch earlobe or ‘gauge’ earlobe repairs or large piercing holes need more significant surgical intervention and this simple process of the ‘Cross Technique’ will not usually suffice. Our cosmetic or plastic surgeons are available to help with these more complicated repairs.

If the ‘Cross Technique’ can be utilised, then:

A high concentration product is applied to the pierced area for a few seconds. A mild stinging sensation is often experienced for a few minutes.

The piercing hole is then gradually lessened by stimulation of the new collagen and skin which grows up from the base as the healing process occurs.

This product is reapplied every 4-6 weeks (usually only 3 times). Improvement is seen commonly after the second application and continues improving over the next 12 months.

  • The treated area can be re-pierced. We recommend you wait at least three months for the healing of scar tissue before getting another piercing in the treated area.

  • Apply a barrier cream such as Vaseline or Bepanthen, vaseline, etc) 4 times each day on the former pierced area.
