Some spontaneous closure can occur overtime however, if the tissues have been stretched too far, a significant irregularity will remain. How much of a residual problem will depend on your age; how long the ear has been stretched; and how much stretching the tissue has been through.

Stretched earlobes or ear gauging is the gradual stretching of a hole in the ear lobe, using progressively larger and larger “gauges” over a period of time.

At Cosmetic Image Clinics we offer earlobe reconstruction, which is done by surgically revising some of the skin around the rim and hole of the enlargement and then reshaping the ear to reflect its original shape.
This surgical option involves cutting away a small section of skin and suturing the hole closed.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes per earlobe. Only a few stitches are required and these stay in for about a week. Scarring is generally minimal and gradually fades over a period of a few weeks.
In some very minor cases, a non-surgical option called the ‘Cross Technique’ uses a strong chemical acid which can ‘glue’ the tissue together to help re-heal the hole and stimulate new collagen growth. However this is usually only available for earlobes which have been stretched gradually overtime by wearing heavy earrings.
